How Strong is your Vision?
As we refine our vision and move towards it, there are two factors that will work very hard against us: an internal factor, and a sociological one.
Our amygdala will keep flooding our bloodstream with stress hormones, causing our brains to tell us incredibly convincing stories about why we should stay where we are.
The Status Quo is safe.
We may find a colleague, or even a manager, telling us that we don’t need that special training, or additional education — she may tell us that we are too curious, and suggest that we go back to our cubicle.
Or we may find a sibling, or a spouse, telling us that that job is not what we want because it is too far away.
We must treat the people who are holding us back with empathy, compassion, and kindness, and resist the temptation to act as victims.
Start sharing your vision with the people who are willing to listen. Find those who will hold you up. Stay close to them, and exchange the favor by sharing your energy.
The emotional labor that you put into this process will start paying dividends soon.
